Summary

A parterre located directly north of (and adjoining) the Iron Court, part of the formal gardens from the early 18th century, first shown on 1749 mapping, but evidently under construction in 1706. By 1761 the feature had been removed, as part of the mid-late 18th century landscaping. The levelled ground upon which the parterre was laid out still survives (the North Lawn), and should be retained as a landscape feature.

  • PARTERRE (Early 18th C to Mid 18th C - 1706 AD to 1752 AD)

Description

A parterre c. 90m wide and 180m long located directly north of (and adjoining) the Iron Court, part of the formal gardens from the early 18th century, first shown on 1749 mapping (1), but evidently under construction in 1706 (with the area marked as the 'newly level'd ground') (2). Cruciform pathways converged on a central feature (possibly a fountain), with pathways around the edge of the parterre and a greenhouse at the North end (1). No features observed during field survey (11/12/2012), except a steep scarp marking the end of the level ground, coinciding with the North end of the feature. A modified version of the parterre was proposed by Capability Brown (3), but it does not seem that thi was executed and by 1761 the feature had been removed (4).
