Description
The site of the 6th Duke's Orange Garden, part of the formal gardens dating to the early 18th century. It is first noted in 1692, perhaps replacing an old orange garden, and was extended in 1703 (5, p.17). The orange garden is first shown on 1706 as an area 25m wide and 575m long aligned with the House running approximately NNE-SSW (1). By 1749 the mapping a central pathway converging on a central point, possibly a fountain. No visible features were observed during field survey (11/12/2012). The Orange Garden is described by Thomas Player in 1712 as 'pretty long but only the breadth of the House' (2). The area was planned to become the 'Aloe Garden' on Brown's plan (3), but by 1785 any features relating to the Orange garden are absent from the mapping (4). The associated Orange House, located at the North end of the Orange Garden, was removed in c. 1770-1779 (6), and it is likely that the Orange Garden ceased to exist at the same time.
