Description
A square ornamental fish pond, first shown on 1706 mapping as part of the Canal Gardens (1), later shown on 1749 (2) and 1751 (3) mapping as a separate body of water. The feature derives from earlier fish ponds/water features shown on 1610 mapping (4), and fish ponds are referenced as part of the park in the earliest descriptions dating to 1327 (5, p.7). Part of the early 18th century formal gardens. Later subsumed/replaced by the Upper Pond in 1753 (5, p.20).
