Description
A body of water 20m wide and 150m long, part of the formal gardens from the early 18th century, first shown on 1706 mapping as a series of rectangular water pieces (15mx70m) separated by pathways, with a large square open body of water at the South-East extent (1). This feature appear to be a modification of earlier water features/ponds in this area (4). By 1749 the mapping shows the area covered halved, with a single body of water in this location, labelled the 'Canal', with the large square open body of water at the South-East extent now shown as a separate 'Pond' (2) and this continues to be the case on 1751 mapping (3). Replaced/subsumed by the construction of the Upper Pond in c. 1753 (5, p.20).
