Description
(1) That so much variety and subtlety of effect could have been described by Whately after only 30 years’ growth may have been due to Brown’s innovative use of a vehicle for transporting semi-mature trees from one part of the garden to another. In planting the sides of the valley, he probably made use of quite substantial trees removed from the south front. The creation of the valley also involved an earth-moving operation on a scale never before attempted here with spade, wheelbarrow and cart: in 1747 some 23,500 cubic yards of soil were moved by these methods.
