Description

in the middle of the south side of the Grecian Valley, this square statue base was home to a now unknown statue. It is depicted on the 1843 estate map and the 1880 1st Edition O.S. map. The base was excavated in Nov. 1998 after being discovered using a geophysics survey.

The dimensions of the base are 0.8m x 0.9m x 0.08m. It consists of consolidated rubble made up of limestone (40%), ironstone (20%), mortar (30%), tile, brick and gravel. The corner stones are large pieces of ironstone (north side) and limestone (south side), between 18cms and 26cms in length. The rubble core is made up of stones on average 10cms in length. The whole base is well consolidated by a grey lime mortar. Although the profile is good and the edges are sharp, the south end of the base has eroded slightly leaving an angled edge. Added into the mortar on the SW side is a piece of brick. The base is fairly well consoloidated and in little danger of breaking up.

A statue by Van Logteren has been donated to place on top of the original base which should happen in 1999. This will remain until the original is identified. Archaeological Comments - Site:155036*0 Has been fully excavated (Nov. 1998) and recorded and is waiting for new statue (due 1999). The small size of the base suggests that an urn once stood on top of it.
