Description
Two-storey double pile house ( it was single pile but a parallel rear range was added in the 19c) with two external front stacks and two windows, ( on both ground and first floors) brought forward to the same line. Both ranges gable-ended, the rear ridge and eaves lower than those over the main range. The west end of the rear range extends beyond the original house. External lateral stack near the centre of the rear wall. Lean-to enclosed porches over the west, main, entrance and the back door. Roof of double roman tiles with matching ridge. Walls of house front and sides rendered and limewashed with black tar band, rear rubble stone but east end lower part limewashed. Rear with brick jambs to door and first floor window openings. The first floor of the rear range of the western end, is either added or rebuilt, the mortar is different. Built in the 17c as three room cross-passage two storey farmhouse, with front lateral stack and, probably, rear stair turret. In the late 19c the two storey, but lower, rear range was added, with rear lateral stack, giving kitchen and dairy accommodation. In a good state of repair. Coal Shed and Lavatory: Two-cell rectangular outbuilding, roof gables on long sides. Walls mostly of brick under tile roof. Built as a pair of privies, between 1903-1929, straddling pre- existing boundary wall.
Linhay, now store/ stockhouse: Recorded seperately as MNA181996. Grade II Listed.
Stable, now store: Single storey gable ended purpose built stable, single ridged roof. Rubble stone walls under slate roof. Early 20c. Chicken Shed: Rectangular gabled outbuilding, aligned with and abutting stable. Weatherboarded walls under tile roof. Mid 20c.
Cart Linhay, now garage/ store: Four bay open-fronted building with single pitch roof, east bay with double doors. Vertical plank walls under corrugated iron roof. First appears on 1903 O.S. Somerset Sheet XXXIV.2, slightly shorter than at present. Garage built on east end, mid-20c.
Pigsties, now store: Small rectangular building with single pitch roof, facing onto and integral with small yard. Thick walled, possibly from earlier building. Roman tile roof over rubble stone walls. First appears on 1889 OS Somerset sheet XXXIV.2, scale 1:2,500, but on the site of west end of earlier farmhouse, which is shown intact on the 1841 Selworthy Tithe Map and ruinous on the 1876 Holnicote Estate Map. It is possible that parts of the pigsty are remnants of this house. Small building shown on 1889 map in corner of yard, but removed shortly after. See also MNA141353. [1]
An attractive double pile farmhouse set at the north end of Allerford. The front, southwest, range was a three room cross-passage house, the partition between the inner room and hall has been removed, creating one large room with external front stack and advanced hall window. The partition between the hall and cross-passage was a plank and muntin screen, only the top rail remains, The cross-passage has gone and the front wall rebuilt with a window (advanced, as the hall window) and an external stack. The rear extension, two storey but lower than the main range, was added in the late 19c. Some of the farm buildings survive and include a 17c thatched two storey linhay. This has lost one bay at the south end but is still a remarkable survival. [2]
