Description

A much-altered house of monastic origin, the present building dates from the early C16th, with notable Queen Anne alterations and Edwardian renovation by Colonel Jenner. The topiary and flower gardens contain medieval walls, ancient box and numerous 'rooms'.

Wiltshire SMR records the gardens as "A historic garden with an early - mid 18th century garden gate to the east of the main door, 18th century and later walls, gates and gatepiers in various parts of the garden. A small park to the north of the house, includes a lime avenue and other rows of lime trees, that were surveyed by the Ordnance Survey in 1885-6. Apart from the walls, the garden is an Edwardian creation. Much of the hedging and paths laid out by Jenner survives as does the small knot garden with its topiary and lily-pool. The gardens include a dovecote, enclosed flower beds, lily pools with fountains, a topiary suggesting chessmen, two 17th century armillary sundials and formal rose beds."
