Description

A water meadow system at Higher Allerford is suggested from aerial photographs taken in 1947, there is no evidence for this on the ground and it is likely that removed field-banks have shown on the photographs. [1]

It was not possible to view the original photograph [RAF.CPE.UK.1980 3018 April 1947] but on recent aerial photographs on Google Earth from 2019 and Environment Agency lidar, there are parallel and perpendicular ditches that resemble a water meadow in the field south of the river, centred at SS 90603 46800, which fits with the NGR provided in Source 1, above, but which was plotted in the field to the north. [2-4]

The Brandish Street Farm Archaeological Survey report, one of a series of farm surveys on the Holnicote estate, shows the 1841 Selworthy Tithe map overlain with field names. The ditches visible on the aerial photographs (described above) are located within the fields Hoopers Meadow and Bull Bridge Meadow. [5].
