Description
A trackway uncovered during excavations in 2001, running east-west across the lower courtyard [MNA148215] from the entrance to the upper courtyard. The trackway comprised a c15cm thick, densely cobbled with a cobble / gravel spread to either side and was assumed to be of C4th date, representing access to the villa complex at its height. No evidence for contemporary structures was found leading he excavator to conclude that this area formed an open courtyard in the C4th.[SNA62018]
Below this trackway, a layer of hill wash was found to cover an earlier, less well built trackway running in the same direction. To the south and associated with the earlier trackway were two substantial rectangular post holes, which were interpreted as evidence that in earlier periods of the villa's occupation there had been structures in the lower courtyard, perhaps representing the agricultural buildings / farmyard of the site.[SNA62018]
The results of these excavations have yet to be published.
