Description

This long, narrow corridor/ portico runs length of west wing of the villa, from Room 5 to Room 15. The low eastern wall forms boundary of garden court and an entrance in the centre provides access to the court from the west wing rooms. Before 2010, the wall east wall was capped with a pitched cap comprised of re-used Roman limestone roof tiles, with a modern stone coping.
The corridor has two sets of steps, leading up into Room 5b and vestibule of bath-house. At the northern end, there is a stone drain running from the wall of Room 15 at an angle to a soakaway in the garden court. The rest of the surface, between this drain and a large stone threshold at the south end, is laid to tarmac, but this covers an almost complete C4th geometric mosaic. [SNA62028]
Two test pits were excavated in the corridor as part of the buried mosaic survey, which both revealed sections of the extensive mosaic at a very shallow depth below the tarmac (c.0.1m). The preservation of the mosaic in the southernmost pit was very good and the striped boarder design deemed to reflect it proximity to the threshold. In the northern pit the tesselated pavement was less well preserved with some damage evident in the centre, and evidence of burning / scorching in places. The pattern of the mosaic was alternating coloured bands with a central pattern of interlocking circles. [SNA62068]
A more detailied description of the mosaic pattern can be sound in Neal and Cosh's Roman Mosaics of Britain [SNA62067].
In 2010 the north and south ends of the corridor were uncovered [SNA65115], the new cover building was erected in 2011 and then in 2012 the central section of the mosaic was excavated by National Trust archaeologists [SNA65538]. The original doorway from the courtyard in the centre of the portico was found with traces of a pelta mosaic at the threshold but this area had been badly worn with evidence of patching first in mosaic and then with a pink clay earth floor with pink grog-tempered ware inclusions.
