Description

This rectangular room, associated with the northern bathhouse complex contains remains of stokehole at southern end of the east wall, with aperture (blocked) leading into hot rooms in room 22. Stokehole "cheeks" composed of very large ashlar blocks. The floor level in this room is more than 1m below the grassy surface of the adjacent external area to the west, the open space below the Nymphaeum, and is covered with gravel.

This is thought to have been the furnace room for Room 22 and the large stokehole cheeks were constructed to take a large hot water tank. Three large iron bars were found here in the 1864 excavation which were thought to have been reused there to support it.

An east-west wall survives at floor level, possible evidence of division of this area into two rooms (like Room 16 in the west wing). Previously there has been some disturbance of buried deposits by rabbit burrowing, but the extent of this is unknown. Additionally the extent of reconstruction in the room is also unknown, with the exception of the west wall which has been rebuilt. [SNA62028].

In 2016, the south side of the south-east corner of the room was excavated showing disturbance and layering of the 1960s but also late Roman rubble build up [SNA68987].
