Description

Small room to the north of corridor 5b, with hypocaust flues visible in walls faces and an incomplete 4th-C mosaic floor with geometric pattern. The room was first excavated in 1864 but re-excavation was undertaken in 1965 to prove the floor levels and again in 1980 to expose the mosaic. The mosaic survives around edges of room and is marked by a post-Roman "squatter" hearth in the centre of the room where mosaic where the floor had been eroded. The hearth comprised of reused box flue tile fragments inserted into the opus signinum bedding [SNA62068]. From the photograph included in the management gazetteer, the floor level of this room appears significantly lover than that of room 5b. Surviving archaeology was re-buried under a soil layer, geotextile marker and coarse gravel as part of the mosaic survey undertaken in 2000. [SNA62028]
Excavation notes published in the Journal of Roman studies record that rooms 6 and 7 were rebuilt after a fire with room 7 being separated from a formerly larger single room to form a passage. [SNA62055]
The buried mosaic survey excavation in room 6 revealed that the remnant mosaic was largely confined to the edges of the room. An additional area of scorching in the south west corner was noted, along with the partial collapse of the underlying hypocaust along the western side of the room. A virtually complete mosaic was also recorded in the corridor to the east of room 6. This is 6a which has a design of large, alternating red and white rectangles with further evidence of localised scorching. [SNA62068]

The conservation covering layers placed over the floor of Room 6 in 2000 were re-excavated in 2010 and the mosaic cleaned and recorded. It is now on display withint the West Range Cover Building.
