Description

This room is interpreted as the triclinium or dining room of the C4th house and contains the largest surviving mosaic in situ on the site above a hypocaust. The triclinium was first investigated in Farrer's excavations in 1864 and shortly after the protective shed was erected above it. The room was subject to excavation again by Goodburn in 1983, which showed that the C4th hypocaust lay directly above the bedrock indicating that all previous phases were removed when the triclinium was built. The mosaic was partly re-laid in 1993 and the room has been subject to various cleaning and environmental monitoring exercises. [SNA62028]

Bio deterioration was measured of the stone and mosaic in this room was surveyed by Dr R D Wakefield in 2000 heavy colonisation was recorded in the north south and west walls with lichen and algal growth forming thick mats at the wall bases. Streaks of orange-green photosynthetic material were also noted on plaster underneath the windows of the east wall where water was seeping through a broken windowsill. For the most part it was found that the deterioration was aesthetic in nature, with the limestone beneath the biomats being intact. The mosaics were found to be being colonised with the aid of water retention in the mortar, although no deterioration of tesserae was evident and superficial growths were easy to remove [SNA62022].
