  • ENCLOSURE (Post Medieval - 1540 AD to 1900 AD)

Description

The sub-oval enclosure to the southeast of Hurlstone Lane (115298) can be seen from the beach and the fields near Porlock Bay. It is enclosed by a bank, but the gorse is so thick that it is very difficult to even examine the bank, the inside has not been visited because of the vegetation. It is possible that this is one of the potato patches established in the Bossington and West Luccombe areas in the late 18c but it is not known if this is its origin, or whether it is earlier. (1)

The post medieval enclosures were visible as earthwork banks and were mapped from historical aerial photographs as part of the Severn Estuary RCZAS mapping project. Further information, sources and photograph references are available in the Exmoor National Park HER record MSO8051. (2-3)
