Description
The 'Buddlelake' or Buddle stream flows through Budlake and on to Francis Court and Newhall Farms before running west of Broadclyst Moor and eventually joining the River Clyst. There is a long history of disputes between tenants of the two farms as the supply of water was essential to them both.
The motorway cut across the long established pattern of watercourses which controlled and fed the water to the two farms. On Francis Court remains of the old pattern are shown by drains from behind Lower Lodge, from the Withy beds and from under the motorway southeast of the farm, through a 1.2m diameter concrete pipe. These join, emerging from a small archway of cut Killerton stone, about 3m across, and return under the motorway to Newhall Farm. The drain from the Withy beds has a similar stone arch in the copse, but it is very battered. Other drains run from the west of the farm to meet the main channel.
