Description
This area has very high archaeological potential. The area is under scrub and appears not to have been ploughed or otherwise significantly disturbed since the site was abandoned by the military. The partially infilled remains of a trench (MNA201818) and other features are visible within this area. Any works within this zone should be preceded by archaeological investigation, and overall, the guiding principle here should be to preserve features intact and in situ, although that does not preclude limited archaeological investigation to characterise and define surviving features and structures. The only part of this zone deemed of less archaeological potential is the northernmost area, close to Upper Road. Here, in the early 2000s, the lagoon or stabilisation tank was filled in, along with the reed bed to the east which projected into the neighbouring field (the latter remains outside NT ownership). This work coincides with the removal of the D2 accommodation road, and came about following the purchase of this land by the former tenant.
The settling tank and surrounding features at the NE boundary of the site were cleared and exposed during early 2024.
