Description
Internally the stable block is divided into three sections. The central door gives onto an approximately square room (L.10) with three 19th-century double stalls set against the east wall. The northern of these stalls has been removed for the installation of a modern, timber dog-leg stair serving the upper level. To north and south, rooms L.08/09 and L.11 are both provided with high quality 19th-century timber stalling. Room L.09 retains two timber feed chutes from the upper level.
At first floor level, the stable is divided in to two separate parts. To the south, the space has ben refurbished to provide NT staff domestic accommodation (Rooms G.42 – G50 inclusive) and retains little visible original fabric. To the north, is a single open space (The Hayloft).
The roof structure comprises a uniform, single-phase construction of 11 bays demarcated by ten, joggled king-post trusses with raking struts. This roof dates to the late 19th-century and was introduced following an extensive fire in 1887, which destroyed the previous roof and damaged much of the first floor structure.
