  • HORSE ENGINE HOUSE (Late 18th C to Early 19th C - 1767 AD to 1832 AD)

Description

Barn and horse engine house, now museum and shop. Barn C18 possibly earlier, altered late C20 horse engine house late C18-early C19, altered late C20. Local stone random rubble, thatched roofs, half hipped to barn, double Roman tiled roof addition on north-east side. [1]

Threshing Barn, now used to house an exhibition of farm implements: Large, tall and rectangular threshing barn with opposed pair of threshing doors and cheeks. Single ridge roof, half-hipped at each end, with roundhouse roof entering west pitch, ridge at lower level. Roof of wheat reed thatch netted, brought down over threshing doors, metal valleys between pitch and roundhouse roof. Walls of quarried stone, thinly coursed with small stones. As the roof has been renewed in the 19c the barn is difficult to date. It is shown on the !809/1812 Survey of Holnicote, the stonework is however unlike that of any other building and it is hoped documentary research may give a guide to its age. Re-roofed in the 19c with scissor and A-frame trusses. In the late 19c round-house added to west side, gabled building added on north wall. The barn machinery run by engine in shed on east side of barn installed in 20c. The south sliding door was inserted in 1960. In the late 20c the gabled building on north wall was removed. Important features: well proportioned 17c/ early 18c barn, thatched roof and scissor trusses. Fine pair of opposed threshing doors. In a good state of repair, north truss west blade needs support from top of wall.

Roundhouse, disused at time of survey: Very nearly circular but opens at east end opposite the barn. The conical roof pitch forms an apex which continues eastwards as a ridge to join the west pitch of the barn roof, just below the barn ridge. Thatched roof, with metal lined valleys where it joins the barn. Walls of mostly small random waterworn local stone. Added to west side of Threshing Barn, enclosed and protected by the two linhays. In the 20c the horse engine was taken out. Important features: a significant example of this type of building, possibly the only example in the locality with thatched roof and unusual roof structure. In a generally good state of repair, recently rethatched. Stonework needs attention in places. [2]

The roundhouse and barn are part of the a late medieval house on the Estate, a former manor house, set in Lynch hamlet with a chapel and an excellent set of vernacular farm buildings. The outbuildings are remarkable, a threshing barn and roundhouse (this record), all thatched, one and half storey linhay range, also thatched, and single storey linhay backing onto the road. Behind the house is a detached medieval kitchen, with many alterations and additions, but with a heavy mullion window in the west wall with no glazing rebates. [3]
