Description
(1-2) An oval stone mound situated on top of the north-western edge of a ridge lying within the moor. The mound is approximately 6 metres long, 4 metres wide and 0.5 metres high. Its nature and location suggest that it is a prehistoric burial barrow. It is unlikely to be a prehistoric clearance cairn because it is situated at approximately 380 metres above Ordnance datum which, from evidence of prehistoric field systems elsewhere in the Peak District, is too high for cultivation (Barnett pers comm) It is situation in a topographical distinct location which is typical of prehistoric barrows.
The barrow makes the location of the burial(s) a prominent feature in the landscape. This prominence is heighted by the barrow's positioning on the neck of a ridge crest with land dropping away everywhere apart from to the north-west where the ground is flat. The deliberate and careful selection of this site makes the burial place of the dead, and from some locations the barrow itself, highly visible from surrounding hills and gives extensive views across the landscape from the site itself. Barrows such as this one have been interpreted as helping to remind the living of their ancestry, of their kinship with their communicate and of their association with a geographic location.
