Description
A former cart track connects Lansallos churchtown with its cove. It has a regular width of 2m and the upper section has been partly levelled into the slope, with a hedge built along the downslope side. Where the track approaches the beach it runs in a deep and impressive rock-cut channel for c30m. Here it is up to 6m deep and pick marks are clearly visible in its sides. Wheel ruts have been worn into the rock at the base of the channel.
A ledge set back 0.3m halfway up the W side of the rock-cut section may be evidence of a footway; at the beach end of the cutting there are rectangular cuttings in the rock which may have supported wooden steps.
The track appears to have served principally as a sanding way for farms at Lansallos Churchtown (Highertown and Lansallos Barton). Considerable investment may have been required to create the rock-cut section so agricultural needs would appear more plausible than, for instance, smuggling.
