Description

(1) Post Medieval walled-round rectangular 'well', known as St Bertram's Pool. It is fed from a spring at Coffin Well to the south-east. Coffin Well is stone-lined and coffin-shaped, and covered by sleepers. The overflow goes into St Bertram's Pool via a culvert. The Pool is also fed from storm drains from the Hall to the north-west.

The well has a drystone wall surrounding it with steps down to a lower level, then an even deeper level filled with water. The deeper level is supplied from a culvert built into the wall of the intermediate level. The water flows out of the well as a decorative waterfall. Within the wall directly to the north of the culvert there is an alcove of unknown purpose. The culvert comes underground from the west, and is marked on the surface by a gully (up to 1m wide and 0.3m deep) culminating in a circular hollow. Between St Bertram's Pool and Coffin Well there is a well shaft covered with metal sheet, presumably marking another point where the spring resurges. The water from this shaft issues into the River Manifold to the east of St Bertram's Bridge [NTSMR 60111].

Within the 1910 Sales Catalogue of Ilam Hall it is stated that water for the Hall was "pumped from springs in the park, which are believed to be unfailing, by a self-acting Blake's Ram to cisterns in the House" (Martin, Wood and Larkin, 1910). It is possible that the springs referred to were these or those at the boil holes to the south of the Hall.
