Summary

The Brewhouse and Carpenter’s Yards are laid out to the east o the Stable Court, each with a range of service buildings to the south side, which together form the northern boundary of the Queen’s Court. The service ranges are arranged to each side of a raised entrance driveway and gate, providing access to Queen’s Court from the park. On the south side of the service ranges, narrow ‘sunken’ yards abut the buildings, accessed by stairs descending from the raised track. Kip’s engravings of c.1701 indicate that, in the 8th century, the buildings of the brewhouse and carpenter’s yard formed a single range beneath a continuous roof, the central entranceway being arched over ad incorporated into the structure. This suggests tat the ground level within the Queen’s Court was at the level of the sunken ‘yards’, and has subsequently been built up. Indeed, given the eaves height, an arched entrance between the two ranges would only work were the ground level significantly lower.
