Monument Types

  • (Former Type) ARCHBISHOPS PALACE (Medieval to Mid 16th C - 1066 AD to 1566 AD)
  • COUNTRY HOUSE (Early 17th C to Mid 20th C - 1601 AD to 1966 AD)

Description

In its current form, the east front presents a unified elevation of eight, regular timber-framed gables, with canted bay windows at first floor level, above a stone ground floor wall. An entrance arch towards the south of the elevation gives onto a passageway that leads through to the Water Court from the Private Garden. Examination of the masonry of the ground floor wall of the garden front, and within the Still Room Passage, reveals a number of clear straight joints, however, implying that the character of the range had developed over at least 3 separate phases prior to the unification of the elevation in the early 17th century. At each stage of its remodelling, the range has undergone fairly radical alteration which makes earlier layouts difficult to identify with any degree of certainty.
