Description
The South Range reflects to a large extent the layout of the North Range and was presumably originally similarly arranged, though lacking the cellarage of the northern side. It has, however, been subject to significantly more drastic modification than the north range, particularly in the 17th century with the introduction of a series of state rooms, which served to remove most traces of any early layout. To the garden the elevation owes much of its appearance to Thomas Sackville’s reordering, with a seven bay arcade at ground floor level, regular fenestration of nine-light transformed and mullioned windows at first floor level, topped by three shaped-gables with Sackville leopard finials housing flat headed, eight-light mullioned and transomed windows lighting the attic space. To the west end, the elevation steps out twice with the perpendicular projection of the Boudoir and the block of the King’s Tower, mirroring the Poet’s Parlour/Ballroom an the Duke’s Tower to the east respectively.
