Description

Description
Roman roof, hypocaust and floor tiles, wall plaster and building debris first discovered in 1889. Trial trenching in 1972 as a response to plough damage uncovered well built wall foundation of limestone. Pot and coin evidence suggests 2nd to 4th century occupation. A number of Roman type kilns are known in the vicinity and a Roman road must cross the area. Evidence suggests some larger settlement than a villa.
Excavations in 1984 found a rough tesselated pavement along with Roman tiles and building materials. The indications were of a possible Romano-Christian village, and an area of some archaeological importance in the settlement of Southern Hampshire.

A ingle timber lath was recovered from the face of the river bank during a monitoring visit on 9/7/2019. This may possibly have originated from one of the buildings recorded by the 2009 geophysics survey though it is thought they may have used wattle and daub rather than lath and daub on the walls of the buildings.
