- BUILDING (Post Medieval - 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
Description
Remains of a small building on the W side of the combe at the N end of the farmland. The building is shown on the historic maps as extant. The tithe map also lists the small enclosure 134 on the other side of the stream as ‘garden’. The building is built into the E facing bank and aligned NNW-SSE. The rear wall of stone rubble survives to a height of 1m with slight remains of the return walls at either end. The front can partially be traced but has mostly collapsed down the bank. The interior space is covered with rubble. There is no evidence of roofing material. The building is about 8m long and 2.5m wide. Immediately across the stream the opposite bank has a stone revetment. A few metres to the N on the E side is a small gully. It is narrow at the upper end, broadening out and levelling. On the W is a large bank, stone revetted. On the E is a low section of dry stone walling supporting the side of the gully. It is about 8m long. The feature is clearly deliberately constructed, but the function is unclear. The most likely is for sheep dipping, providing the stream was diverted slightly. The ruins of a probable post-medieval agricultural building are visible on aerial photographs located on the west bank of Kipscombe Combe. Centred at SS 7595 5022, in the base of Kipscombe Combe four upstanding walls are visible, but there is no roof to the structure. It measures approximately 5 metres wide by 10 metres wide. Given the location and size of the structure it is likely to be a field barn or similar, but its precise date and function are unclear. It is shown, but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was constructed prior to publication, but not in use at this time. On later photographs the structure is not visible, but this may be due to an increase in tree cover. [2]
