Description
Shallow overgrown quarry site shown on the 1889 1:2500 map, annotated ‘Old Quarry’. Located in the SE corner of field 1158. It is about 12m long and 5-6m wide. [1]
A small quarry of probable medieval or post-medieval date is visible on aerial photographs as a levelled earthwork, to the east of West Lyn Farm at circa SS 7289 4866. The earthwork itself is marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 as an 'Old Quarry', indicating it has passed out of use by this point. However, the earthwork is not levelled until the second half of the 20th Century. Several similar former quarries are visible on aerial photographs in this area, many of which are marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. However, if also clearly marked on the current base map these may not have been transcribed by the National Mapping Project survey. [2]
