Summary

Small core of pebble flint (25mm x 23mm x 11mm) characteristic of late Mesolithic industries in north Devon and Exmoor It is of grey flint showing several narrow removal scars for blades, and a larger flake ending in a hinge fracture. There is a large amount of cortex remaining on the outside of the piece although this has also been damaged.

Description

Small core of pebble flint (25mm x 23mm x 11mm) characteristic of late Mesolithic industries in north Devon and Exmoor It is of grey flint showing several narrow removal scars for blades, and a larger flake ending in a hinge fracture. There is a large amount of cortex remaining on the outside of the piece although this has also been damaged.

The core was found in a gateway between fields 703 and 772. ‘Late’ Mesolithic on Exmoor may date anywhere between say 6800 BC and 3000 BC, possibly later in some areas.
