Description
Stone built gate piers and short section of adjoining wall on the N side of West Challacombe lane 30m W of the farm. The gate piers mark the E end of the terraced access track 025, and probably post-date the 1889 map which shows an earlier access track 031 joining West Challacombe lane 80m W. The piers are circular in plan, stone and mortar, roughly re-pointed and repaired. Slabs are set upright on top of the walls.
Lengths of wall adjoin to E and W, the latter becoming lost in thick vegetation. There is another single pier at the entrance to the small close NW of the farm adjacent to the holloway and another pair (033) at the foot of the holloway.
These features are probably an attempt to formalise and enhance the approaches to West Challacombe farm.
Recommendations: The piers should be maintained in a sound condition, cleared of any vegetation, and if necessary repaired with the appropriate (lime based) mortar.
