Description
Turf bank formed with the steeper scarp and ditch on the inner south east side. The bank is 2.5m wide and c1m high from base of ditch., It appears to be an original laying out or marker bank for the early 19th century enclosure, however when constructed the enclosure wall has cut the corner to the east, avoiding this bank. [1]
Turf bank 2.5m wide x 1m high probably relating to early C19 laying out markers for enclosures (see County SMR). The bank extends 60m WNW from the N corner of enclosed land below Little Hangman, becoming less defined on the uphill side. Then turns S for 60-70m and fades into a longer broad bank cut by the coastal path, that in turn fades out on the slope. Feature is not shown on the historic maps. [2]
A post-medieval field boundary is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork to the south east of Little Hangman Cliff, Combe Martin. The boundary runs in an east to west direction for approximately 60 metres, before turning approximately 90 degrees and running north south for 95 metres. The southern end of the boundary meets the existing 19th Century enclosure boundaries in this area. The boundary is not shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting that it was not in use at this point. [3]
