Site visit 14/03/2000:
Substantial and impressive hollow way running through High Plantation. Forms a continuation of NTSMR 32624. From an E-W forestry track, the holloway climbs the hill in a NW direction, initially as a single flat-bottomed track 5m wide and 1.5m deep; this section is still used by farm vehicles. Beyond here, as the ground becomes steeper, the route becomes abraided with a number of parallel and interconnecting tracks, typically up to 5m wide and 1.5m deep. Once over the creast of the ridge the track revets to a single route and passes a prehistoric barrow (NTSMR 31111). It leaves High Planation (and the NT estate) via a gate (NTSMR 32722) in the perimeter wall.
The route is a long-lived and well used track, connecting Cockayne and Bransdale as a whole with the high moorland to the N - the route runs N along Cockayne Ridge and eventually goes to Stokesley [1]-[5].

The route is shown on the 1782 map, although on a slightly straighter alignment, and is labelled "from Stokesley" [6]. It is also shown on the OS 1857 6" and the OS 1912 25" maps as a bridle way; the depicted alignment is one of the abraded routes [7] [8].
