Description
Existing NTSMR entry:
"The monument is one of a small number of surviving wayside crosses along the medieval monastic route known as Mastiles Lane and associated with Coverham Abbey. The 13th/14th century cross includes a prominent gritstone socket stone. The stone is roughly triangular with the long axis running approximately north to south to a length of 1m, a maximum width of 0.80m and depth of 0.40m. The centrally placed socket hole measures 0.30m by 0.25m with a maximum depth of 0.20m.
"A prominent boulder which is the base of a monastic wayside cross is situated on the north side of Water Sinks Gate road just west of Tarn House drive. Miss Ireland's records include sketch depiction."
Existing YDNPA entry MYD 3755:
"[SD 8969 6580] Stone. [TI]. (1) A prominent boulder which is the base of a monastic wayside cross is situated on the north side of the Water Sinks Gate road just west of Tarn House drive. (2-3) The remains consist of a small roughly shaped natural boulder, with a rectangular socket cut into its upper surface. See GP AO/64/152/2. (4) No change since report of 20 5 64. The socket stone measures approx 1.0m square and the socket is 0.3m long by 0.2m wide. Surveyed at 1:10 000"
