Description
The limekiln stands on the boundary between the farmland and the shingle beach. It is a massive square construction, with east and west drawholes for the central pot, which is now infilled. The loading ramp is still in good order, though some erosion is occurring where the vegetation has been worn away. The tops of the walls are in need of attention, and there is some cracking (despite the buttress) on the west, south and east sides. This large kiln seems to have replaced the smaller ones to the east (115412) and the one marked to the west (115405) near the Porlock Clubhouse (115413). Condition: fair. [1]
The limekiln was surveyd in detail in 1992 as part of the VBS surveys on the Holnicote Estate and described as a "significant remains of ·limekiln with the bulk of the building, its entrance chambers (lobbies), stoking holes, and chimney (pot) still largely in tact…Without additional map or documentary evidence it is difficult to accurately date the origins of the kiln. It is shown on the 1841 Porlock Tithe map as two buildings...The site is shown on the 1889 OS first edition 1:2500 scale map (Somerset sheet XXXIV.2) as an "Old Lime Kiln", and likewise on subsequent OS maps. [2]
The limekiln was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Severn Estuary RCZAS project in 2007. Further information, sources and photograph references are available in the Exmoor National Park HER record. [4-5]
