Description

The 1779 - 1851 house was built in the vernacular revival - picturesque style by the VIIth baronet. Why he turned from the severe, almost classical style, to the almost frivolous is not clear, unless he wished to have a complete contrast with the projected new house at Killerton, for which he already had plans by Wyatt and Johnstone. The new Holnicote House was two storey, with leaded light windows and a thatched roof. Several sketches of it survive, some by members of the Acland family. Henrietta particularly enjoyed sketching and was taught by Francis Nicholson at times, as were her family. The house was extended to the south and had about 40 bedrooms, it was known as the ‘cottage’ by the family. The Xth baronet grew up there and it coloured his whole life and his effect on the Holnicote - and Killerton - Estates. The walls of the house, which burnt down in August 1851, still can be seen in Holnicote House garden. The present house (115143) probably sits on cellars that supported the northern end of the ‘picturesque’ cottage. Condition: fair (remaining walls).
