Description

The pillbox lies on heathland lies about 200m W of the Bind Barrow. It is 6 sided and of brick construction with a concrete roof. 5 of the sides have weapon slits with the 6th side having a small opening as the entrance on the NE side. The pillbox is in very good condition.

We did not enter the pillbox as the floor was 1.1m below the entrance and we did not think we would get out. The interior had blast walls in the middle which also held the roof up. We took several photographs, including an attempt at the interior through weapon slits. A plan and elevation is also included.

The hexagonal pillbox has embrasures on five sides and a door in the northeast facet, with a vent or pistol port to the left of the door. There are brick anti-ricochet walls in the interior. The floor is now 1.1m below the entrance. Proberly constructed 1940-41. There is a central round fixing hole in the centre of the roof and a square-sectioned groove running round near the edge of the roof slab. This pillbox is said to have originally had a thatched roof as camouflage and these features on top of the roof slab may have been part of this.

The site was recorded in November 2003 by H.J. and D.M. Goodson, when it was considered to be in a good stable condition with slight damag from water action. It was re-visted in May 2009 and remains in a good stable condition, although there is a hairline crack through the western side of the roof slab, and there is some soil scouring and erosion immediately around the structure.
