Description

Double fronted with central door and windows each side, but first floor dormers not regularly placed, the left-hand rooms, however, are included with No. 33, Allerford at present. Front angled slightly to both flanking cottages. Roof pitch lower than that of No. 33, continuous with that of Number 31.
Rear with two raked dormers on first floor. Internal rear main stack, external flue added on south-west corner for Rayburn. Rear wall continuous with No. 33, but No. 31 rear wall stepped in.
Roof of double roman tiles with matching ridge. Walls of rubble stone, front limewashed with black tar band, rear ribbon pointed. Wooden lintels except over rear window of living room, wood lintel over back door continues over kitchen window.
Late 16c two or three room two-storey single pile house. Number 31 built on north end 17c. Number 33 added south end 18c/ early 19c ( shown on 1842 Selworthy Tithe Map). On this map a through- way is shown between Number 31 and 32, this is remembered but probably only functioned at ground level, as in numbers 19 and 20 Allerford. The house was re-arranged in the 1970's, new stairs inserted, south cell put with No. 33, bathroom inserted and kitchen with Rayburn put in, cobbled floor removed and level dropped eight inches for this.
Important Features:
External appearance.
Roof truss, purlins and rear rafters.
Blocked open fireplace in living room ( possibly late 16c).
Beam in living room ( late 16c).
Door in bedroom C ( early 19c), understairs cupboard door.
Casement windows.
In a good state of repair.
Outbuildings:
Privy, now coal and woodshed: Lean-to on garden wall with single pitch roof. Roof of triple V tiles over walls of rubble stone, brick and planks. On 1889 O.S. Somerset Sheet XXXIV.2, Scale 1:2,500. Important features: external appearance. In a fair state of repair.

Farthings Cottage was recorded in 2001 as part of the Holnicote Estate survey: The centre cottage in a row of three. Originally two room with a central doorway, the southern room has been included with cottage 33 for the last forty years or so. The northern room retains a late 16c-early 17c beam and a large rear stack with a blocked fireplace, The small room B had a cobbled floor until the 1970s and functioned as a through-way, but need not necessarily always have been so. The south room was either added or mostly rebuilt (now in No. 33). There are two rooms, bedroom and bathroom, on the first floor, the roof structure is similar to site 115031.[2]
