Description

The west range has a northerly single storey section, housing calf pens, and a southerly two storey section; the latter has had most of its internal walls and half the floor removed to create a hay store and loft over the former cheese making room ( now store 3). At south end is Dairy Cottage ( 110,149).
The walls are rubble Purbeck stone to the west, with yellow ashlar quoins at openings. Round headed window openings of
two storey section have segmental ashlar arches. Soft mortar, widely spread at the north end. Occasional heathstone. Red brick to east; English bond for single storey, Flemish bond for double sstorey. Brick walls have single brick arches over openings. Gbales of taller section are brick, and have lead sawtooth flashing to lower roof slates.
Both sections have pitched and slated rooves with sawn stone hogsback ridge capping; two storey part has lower pitch and half hips. Recently repaired, lichenous slates but generally good condition. Plain barge with added strip on verge of two storey section. Gables have projecting wallplates but no rafters visible. Common rafters project at eaves.
A pentice walkway is continuous along east side of the range from Dairy Cottage ( 110,149) to D83, allowing dairyman dry access to calf pens and thereby to remainder of buildings. Stone flagged floor. Red brick wall in English bond. Rooved over with grey slate roof, hipped at north end.
The west range has been extensively refurbished recently, including new roof timbers and re-slating. Interior of two-storey section gutted to create additional bale store, but retaining the former cheese-making room.
D79- door missing.
Store 3- large areas of plaster missing from ceiling.
