Description

Imposing centre range comprises a massive open shed -Barn 3- under a wide pitched roof; flanked by lower ranges of stalls and impliment sheds; the latter are fronted by similar cross wings with steeply pitched rooves. All rooves have quarter hips.
The dominant feature is the south facade, comprising wide gable of Barn 3/ Milking Parlour, flanked by similar, lower cross wings, set back slightly. All are of brick, externally clad in random Purbeck slabs- 'crazy paving'. The random stone cladding is also used on return walls of the main wing, above the rooves of the cross wings. Coursed limestone rubble cladding is used on the east and west cross wing gables and below opening W22.
Pointing has been carefully repaired in original 'snailcreep' style. Yellow limestone ashlar quoins at corners and openings - apart from some varied grey Purbeck stone ones on D41.
Both cross wing gables have carved stone ventilation openings below hip barge board, in varients of form of a cross.
Side wall are of red brick, in English bond, with single brick arches to openings. A four bay implement shed still exists on the west side, a similar one on the east side is now occupied by stalls 4/5. In west end shed, three wooden posts support trusses; they are deeply eroded at base and encased in concrete. Posts carry rail, with one remaining diagonal strut, chamfered.
East side post truncated, replaced by breeze block walls creating stalls 4/5, these walls extending only to eaves height. The chamfered timber rail rests on the stubs of the posts, on top of the breeze walls, the northern one being cantilevered on a timber baulk.
The main roof is pitched with quarter hips at either end, clad
in slate with cut stone hogsback ridge. Much lichen but generally good. Three skylights on each pitch, of different sizes. Leaded valleys to north range and front wing rooves, and some eaves level. On the south gable there are two wallplates and two side purlins per pitch, projecting beyond barge. The side ranges have monopitch rooves, slated to the west, corrugated asbestos to the east. The cross wings have slate rooves, recently re-hung. Common eaves level with side ranges. Lead flashing to valleys. Both cross wing gables also have an inner barge board against wall, chamfered.
The cross wing dormers are identical; steeply pitched with half hip and clad in slate. Sawn stone hohsback ridge, cement fillet to hip ridge.
Both yards originally had a front wall and a median wall dividing the yard in two, all are now altered, with inserted gates and truncations. The east yard retains part of its median wall, the remainder being removed for portal frame 1. The west yard no longer has a median wall.
West- front wall of coursed Purbeck rubble, clad on south side only on random slabs to match building elevations. Capped by shallow, ridged, Purbeck cut slabs. Keying location of median wall visible between W31 and D60.
East- front wall of coursed limestone rubble, with inserted modern water trough.
Adverse preservation conditions:
Settlement and damaged bricks at south-east corner of Stall 3. Mortar very deeply eroded in places. At south-east corner of east cross wing, upper four quoins have shifted, possibly as a result of movement of roof timbers.
Vertical crack runs through quoins at north-west corner of west cross wing.
D44- loose quoins.
D46- upper quoins displaced.
W17- damaged, section of ledge and most of frame missing. Planked infill.
W24- very poor condition, repaired with re-used windows. Ledge badly rotted.
Interior:
Barn 3:
D27- needs repairing.
D47- planks rotted at base.
D49- very poor condition, mostly rotted away.
W24- very poor; rotted ledge, crude repairs.
W42- badly rotted base.
W43- badly rotted base.
West side implement store:
Timber posts have very worn bases.
