Description

Single storey with loft room. Two cell with gabled porch at east end. External chimney on east gable, small triangular hole at apex of west elevation. Large shop window fronting road. Ridge of porch lower than shop by about one metre. Roof of main building Bridgewater tiles ( triple roll) with plain ridge tiles. Framed barge boards each end ( southeast corner one missing). Porch Bridgewater tiles ( double roman) with matching ridge. Bargeboards to roof gable. Walls of main building roughly squared and coursed red sandstone, larger stones in quoins and in stack. Porch rear wall mainly red sandstone, but east side wall irregular and mainly of grey-green waterborne boulders. Open access well from store to loft, no stairs or ladder.

Built as a cobbler's shop mid-19c ( not on Selworthy Tithe map 1841, the forge at that time was behind the present Allerford Post Office. Cobbler's shop shown on the 1876 Holnicote Estate map). Late 19c/ early 20c fireplace went out of use, stove set in front. Corner flue early 20c with iron door installed.

Important Features:
External appearance with large shop window.
Firebox with door.
Cupboard in earlier fireplace.
Loft in west end.

In a fair state of repair but neglected. Roof being renovated. [1]

Surveyed in 2001 as part of the Holnicote Estate Survey: A small stone and tile building fronting onto the road through Allerford. It has a workroom with a large window and a fireplace, a smaller storeroom with a loft over, and a porch on the southeast end with a lower ridgeline. The roof timbers were renewed in 1992. It is not tenanted at present and a suitable use as a craftsman’s workshop and display area would be ideal. [2]
