Description

cave entrances and other narrow openings on the east side of a prominent knoll on the steep slopes south of the N.T. Southgate car park. There are no known archaeological finds from this site but the cave earths undoubtedly have archaeological potential. The larger entrance to the south is approximately 1m wide and 2m high but it rapidly narrows to a tunnel at most 0.5m high which is blocked with earth. The northern entrance is 0.3-0.4m wide and at most 1m high.

2003 survey
Two cave entrances lie in the eastern face of a rocky knoll S of the car park. The larger entrance is the southernmost, 1.6m wide and 2.3m high. The tunnel leading off the larger entrance reaches a maximum of 3m in height and 1.5m wide but rapidly narrowing to at most 0.5m high, c5m long then blocked by earth. The northernmost entrance is 0.8m wide and at most 1m high, with a passage c5m long leading from it. The cave is unexcavated (not to be confused with Foxhole Slade Cave near Paviland Cave, excavated by Aldhouse-Green in 1997). No known archaeological finds have been recovered, but the cave earths have potential, apparently most especially the smaller northernmost entrance. The larger entrance has collected a small amount of rubbish as is easily accessible and visible, but the sediment appears intact and there is little sign of damage. The smaller entrance could not be closely examined as it currently appears to be used as an animal den
