  • MANOR HOUSE (Post Medieval - 1540 AD to 1900 AD)

Description

A red brick house dating from the mid to late 17th century, but incorporating some earlier features, particularly a fine early 17th century staircase and having some later additions to the rear. It has two main storeys and an attic floor and a tiled roof with brick chimney stacks. The whole surrounded by walled gardens. Because of the position of the front door in relation to the hall, there is a suspicion that the hall is following the ground floor plan of a medieval hall. The early hall houses were built with the entrances opposite each other at the far end from the dais. Gradually screens were introduced to form a passage and service rooms i.e. pantry, buttery, etc. It can be seen from the plans that the outline of the medieval hall can be fitted over the outline of the modern hall and sitting room. The house, garden and most of the orchard are all within the area contained by the outer moat of the Black Prince's Manor House.
