Description

Site of the urn erected by the first Duke of Buckingham in memory of his father, the first Marquess, who died in 1813. The urn was moved by the school to Walpole Court in 1931 but it is highly likely that the base for the urn still remains in-situ at the base of the back slope of the gravel quarry east of the shell bridge. The precise location of the urn is shown on the 1843 estate map.

(3) In a clearing in the shrubberies behind the Temple of British Worthies stood a large urn, inscribed in Latin and in English, and erected by the 1st Duke in 1814 in memory of his father. It was moved in 1931 to its present position within the school precincts.

Replica of the urn cast by Cliveden Conservation and placed in its original location on 3rd December 2018. The urn has the following inscription:

GEORGIO M. DE BUCKINGHAM
Patri amato
Viro nobili, et clarissimo,
Hanc Urnam,
Moerens, venerans, et exempli memor,
D.D.D.
RICARDUS M. DE BUCKINGHAM
A.S. 1814

translates as
TO GEORGE DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM
A beloved Parent
An illustrious and able Statesman
This urn is dedicated by
RICHARD MARQUESS OF BUCKINGHAM
Who, lamenting his loss
And venerating his memory
Endeavours to eulate his example
A.S. 1814

The urn has one English and two Latin inscriptions, including one by Cicero.

E mail from NT curatlor Gillian Mason 7/12/2018:

'The Marquess Urn was installed on Monday the 3rd December – the plinth the week before – and is a copy of the original now at Walpole Court. We commissioned CCW to replicate the missing handle and to re-carve the lettering so it is legible.
In the task folder ar images of the installation and I hope that at least one will be suitable?
