  • GAME LARDER (Late 18th C to Late 19th C - 1785 AD to 1900 AD)
  • STABLE (Late 18th C to Late 19th C - 1785 AD to 1900 AD)

Description

Although straight joints can be seen front and back where this building joins the main house it would seem likely to have been built at the same time, or perhaps jsut shortly afterwards, i.e. in the perof 1785-1800. The section on the E could previously be entered directly from teh house, this is a large game larger capable of holding on estimation upwards of five hundered pairs, further game storage was provided in building *2. At thw W end of the range is an extremely grand stable and hay loft housing four horses and a stallion, later enlarged to take a further two horses.

IMPORTANT FEATURES - stable fitting including the king-post truss.

ROOF - The wide roof span calls for four purlins on each roof slope, plus the ridge tree. Only one truss is required in the centre of the hay loft. THis is a king-post of distinctive 18th centur design with a wedge driven into the king post socket to hold it in place, rather than a bolt as became comon in the 19th century. The hay loft roof is well torched, the game larder soffit is closed.

WALLS - The fabric of the majority of the building matches that of the original house; irregular pieces of sandstone in mortar finished with limestone dressings, tooled as if to be rendered like the front of the house. THe extension to the stable is of more regular sonte matching building *2.

DETAILS

GAME LARDER - 18th century surround and brick stack to the fireplace, ow used by the oil fired boiler. The inserted flue against the house is of large bricks, it runs into the first floor rather thatn going all the way up to the chimney, the reason for this is not clear. On the house isde is a solid stone topped bench, and at the end a woodn one. A flight of steps rise to a blocked door inot hte house. THe walls and rafter soffit are fairly well plastered, 1888, and H N 1888 are daubed in red ont he first floor walls. A steep ladder rises to a balcony around the edge and across the middle of the first floor. In these joists and sucessive tiers of beam hooks are fixed at about 40cm intervalss, there are sheltered by softwood boards fixed to the top of the beam.

STABLE - The old stables have a black set floor, the addition has a central flagged section with cobbles on either side. THe high stalls are all well executed. Originally four hourse and a stallion could be housed, but the addition provided for a further two horses. THe stallion box subsequently housed a generator.

HAYLOFT - the hay loft floor is at present derelict.
