Summary

This barn has been greatly extended and altered since it was built in the 18th century; in particular a lean-to along the eastern side was added in the 19th century for fifteen cows. The wain doors opening out into the fields may be of the same date as this last alteration.

Description

This barn has been greatly extended and altered since it was built in the 18th century; in particular a lean-to along the eastern side was added in the 19th century for fifteen cows. The wain doors opening out into the fields may be of the same date as this last alteration. Rebuilding of the adjoining fabric has clearly taken place.

ROOF - The roof is of four bays with simple tie-beam trusses and single purlins. The outshot has double purlins and top-wall pieces. At each end is a lean-to of two bays The trusses of the outshot are of oak but all other timbers are sawn softwood. The main part of the building is felted the lean-to is torched.

WALLS - Cobbles with small amount of fine levelling are laid dry between square quoins. The outshot and the rebuilt jambs of the wain door includes more slate levelling and have a slight greeny tinge. Mortar remains within the barn.

DETAILS - The main doors are 19th century with styper and harr hinges, other doors and windows are all early 20th century. There are no ancient internal fittings and no old floor finishes were seen.
