Description
This barn lies beside the Walna Scar road approximately 1m south of Tongue House and formerly used by the farmers of Longhosue. At the time of this survey the barn undergoing re-roofing, - reused the old roofing slates and sandstone ridge.
The main barn is comprised of a shippon with hay loft above and a 3-bay threshing floor. The outshot was used as a shippon, with a bracken store above.
The walls of the barn and outshot are mortared and made of quarried, surface gathered slate cobbles. Internally, all the shippon walls are whitewashed to eaves height. The east gable wall in the main barn is concreted to a height of 2 m. The shippon stall floor areas are raised approximately 15 cm above the height of the feeding passage. The stall partitions are made of hardwood and walna scar slate flags. The king post roof over the main barn is made of modern, sawn, softwood timbers, except for four purlins which are hardwood, adzed. The roof over the outshot is supported by two hardwood purlins, and softwood upright.
IMPORTANT FEATURES - Shippon stalls - still with hardwood uprights and slate partitions.
