Description
[1-13] This site is a grade II listed building. It is an intermittent updraught Scotch kiln, probably late C19th. It is built of red brick, rectangular in plan, 9m long and 5.8m in width, with a wall thickness of 1m, capped by stone flags. It stand to a height of 3.7m. The S end is entered by a round-arched doorway, known as a 'wicket'. The N end wall is also pierced by a wicket, raised to the first floor level to allow for stacking above head height. The E and W elevations are pierced at their bases by rows of seven fire-holes, lined with refractory brick containing coal ash from the last firing c.1940. [There is a scaled drawing of this site in Marshall's 1988 report on pp.88-89, Fig 36-37]. Archaeological Comments - A survey has been carried out at 1:50 in 1987.
[14] In 2009 AOC Archaeology undertook an archaeological survey of Calke Abbey's Limeyards and Brickyards near Ticknall. Their notes for this feature were: "Scoth kiln built of red brick to rectangular plan. The walls are capped with stone flags. The kiln is entered through doorway with round headed arch in south wall and has line of fireholes in the east and west walls. Shown on the 1882 OS map."
