Description

A granite cross erected in 1896 by the Reverend G. Martin, Rector of St Michael Caerhayes, reminds sea-farers of the dangerous currents around the offshore reefs of Dodman Point. In 1896 the Royal Naval destroyers, Lynx and Thrasher, collided in this area, with many casualties. At a later date the cross was struck by lightning and re-erected.

2008 Survey
The cross is a large C19 monument, and minor day-mark, made of cut granite. It stands on a stepped base in a prominent position, above the steep coastal slopes and cliffs at the outer end of Dodman Point, facing out to sea. The cross is made up of five blocks of stone, near square in section and measuring 0.6-0.7m across, and is around 6m high. The base is rectangular, measuring up to 2.6m across, and 0.9m high, rising in three steps. The middle step has a religious inscription giving the date 1896.
