Description
Rashleigh cellars, a courtyard of fish cellars used in the local pilchard processing industry, are situated on Port Gavern property and date from the early 19th century. The single storey northeast range is open fronted to a yard. The old roof line on the main cross range shows the roof ridge of this wing was formerly higher and matched the southwest range. All but the right corner, a rudimentary store, have been converted for domestic use. A single door in the rear wall gives access to a single pitched roof brick privy, now ruined and roofless. The southwest range is single storied with a loft.
The building consists mainly of rubblestone and cob with some slatestone. The pilchard pressing holes are brick framed. Some walls are weatherboarded, and the smoking house has brickwork repair and quoins. The roofs are mainly covered in natural slates, red clay tiles and modern asbestos slates.
