Summary

A memorial slab dedicated to John Harman who recieved a Victoria Cross for his heroism during the Second World War. An inscription is engraved onto the granite slab which is now fixed to a massive fallen salb within the quarry.

Description

A memorial stone dedicated to John Pennington Harman who won a Victoria Cross for destroying an enemy machine gun post almost single-handed (Langham, 1994, p93). The V.C. quarry (108773) had been one of his favourite playgrounds as a child. The memorial is a rectangular granite slab laid at a steep angle onto a massive fallen slab of granite. It measures 4m x 4m x 0.65m and is laid on a 6cm bed of cement with its bottom edge resting on two projecting pins of granite set into the fallen slab.
The inscription on the stone reads:

Greater love hath no man than this
That a man lay down his life for his friends.
To the memory of
JOHN PENNINGTON HARMAN
Aged 29
Son of
Martin Coles Harman and Amy Ruth Harman
Who died of wounds in Burma on
Easter Sunady the ninth of April 1944
For his bravery he was awarded the
Victoria Cross
